This module provides the student Operating Department Practitioner (ODP) with the opportunity to experience and evaluate the care of a surgical patient throughout their entire hospital journey. You will be required to follow a patient journey through pre-admission, preparation for surgery and their post-operative stay on the ward in addition to the three perioperative phases. This wider approach is particularly helpful to support students to develop understanding of the complex nature of surgery, and embrace the multidisciplinary collaboration required to keep patients safe. Indicative content taught on this module will centre around anaesthetic and surgical care practice, and build upon previously acquired knowledge, skills and behaviours from year 1. Delivery extends across three semesters, and incorporates the clinical practice competencies and portfolio within the Practice Assessment Document (PAD). Key topics taught and assessed will include: assessment and management of the difficult airway, invasive monitoring, emergency care planning and procedures, regional anaesthesia and peripheral nerve blocks, care of the paediatric patient and blood products and transfusion.

Welcome to your 2nd year of BSc (Hons) Operating Department Practice at the University of Bolton. This is your research practice module, from which you will gain fundamental knowledge, skills and behaviours of evidence-based practice to underpin your life-long learning and professional career.

This is a single semester, 20 credit module running from September- January.

This module will challenge students to develop knowledge and proficiency in caring for patients in the post-anaesthetic care unit.

This module will develop the student Operating Department Practitioners' knowledge and understanding of the fundamental concepts of human anatomy, physiology and psychology. This module will facilitate the application of indicative content to surgical care practice, including the psychological health and wellbeing of the perioperative patient and practitioner. Key topics taught and assessed will include normal anatomy and physiology of the human body, pathology, the ageing process, haemodynamics, human genetics and psychological health and wellbeing.
