Dear PGR Student
Welcome to your PGR English for Academic Purposes/Academic Writing course, February-March 2019
Introduction to Academic Writing. In this session we review the qualities which characterise academic writing. We consider basic sentence structure in English and how we compose simple, compound and complex sentences. We consider common errors in students' writing at this level, such as subject-verb agreements and fragments and how these may occur. We review the importance of clear meaning in composing complex sentences: in particular the use of relative pronouns/relative clauses. We consider issues around style and register and what is acceptable and advisable in student academic writing. Students should complete the writing tasks and exercises to practise their writing skills
