Bryony Whitehead's Staff Space

This module has been updated in line with HCPC Standards of Proficiency for ODP (2023) and will build upon previously acquired knowledge, skills and behaviours in relation to leadership qualities, behaviours and approaches. It will introduce the ODP learner to underpinning leadership theories and leader development strategies. Equality, diversity and inclusion in the workplace, as well as the promotion and engagement in the learning of others will be covered. As part of this, learners will be supported to plan and deliver a teaching session to another learner in practice, and reflect upon their experience. 

This module has been developed in line with HCPC Standards of Proficiency for ODP (2023) and will inspire you to explore the current trends and future developments of the ODP profession, utilising key transferable knowledge, skills and behaviours acquired throughout your programme of study so far.

You will focus on a more holistic approach to the care of a critically ill patient, including enteral nutrition, invasive line, catheter and bowel care.

Key topics of high dependency and critical care practice will be introduced including care of the ventilated patient, stabilisation and transfer of the critically ill patient and enhanced pharmacology.

Deliverance of the module will be supported by clinical experts in the field, simulation based education and consolidated wherever possible in practice learning environments.

You will be required to undertake work-based learning placements in critical care areas outside of the operating theatre, e.g. intensive care and accident and emergency, in order to gain exposure to various acute patient presentations. Advanced clinical skills will be taught and practised including cannulation, venepuncture, urinary catheterisation and blood gas analysis. Fundamental aspects of ctitical illness will be covered as well as the importance of effective interprofessional communication and handover for safe care prioritisation and delivery. In addition to this, you have enhanced care competencies in your third year PARE skills log. 

Additional key topics taught and assessed include organ donation, 12 lead ECG interpretation, defensible documentation and end of life care.

This module is aligned to the National Competency Framework for Registered Practitioners: Level 1 Patients and Enhanced Care Areas.
