The core aim of the module is to ensure you have a solid knowledge and understanding of the professional photojournalistic environment in relation to the law, ethical requirements and career direction. You will explore topics such as copyright and confidentiality, sourcing and using images, and the reporting of children. The module will develop your understanding of legal and ethical constraints on reporting and image making in the general media. It approaches law and ethics from a journalistic rather than a legalistic or philosophical perspective. The module aims to help protect you from legal action over published material. The module deals with legislation and codes of conduct within which journalists operate. It focuses particularly on contempt of court, defamation and privacy. Current issues emerging in the press and the broader media will be discussed as they arise. Alongside law, you will also learn about photojournalistic and documentary careers within a global industry to prepare you for an individual trajectory into photojournalism, documentary photography and related fields as a profession and to prepare you for a work experience placement. To enhance your professional and interpersonal skills development, you will work alongside other students to produce and develop a group publication.
