This module aims to explore the relevance of cultural and historical context to our reading of literary texts, and to build confidence in approaching texts written in an unfamiliar register. Shifting stylistic conventions will be examined through close study of the characteristics of four substantial texts, covering four distinct periods of literary production: the Renaissance, the long Eighteenth Century, the Victorian Era, and Anglo-American Modernism. Debates surrounding the study of the literary period will be examined, and you will engage with a range of issues including the significance of class, gender, readership/audience, and the changing world view.
