The focus of the module is upon the impact of business operations including material extraction, manufacturing and transportation operations. Compliance with legislation offers a starting point, although the module describes how some businesses are choosing to exceed mere compliance, making environmental performance into a significant order winner. The module teaches students a variety of methods by which environmental impact can be assessed, including the study of water usage, land requirements, the carbon footprint and full life cycle analysis. Strategies to minimise impacts are introduced via case study. Business ethics and issues relating to corporate governance are also addressed, via an holistic supply chain view that takes into account the ‘exporting’ of pollution.
