The nature of the employment relationship is consistently contested within UK and international organisations with critical implications for work and labour management. This module therefore aims to develop your knowledge and conceptual understanding of the labour process, its implications in managing the employment relationship at the macro (national Government policy), meso (industrial relations) and micro (workplace) levels. Within this context, the module will enable you to critically analyse and evaluate the roles and responsibilities of major stakeholders (e.g. governments, employers, trade unions) in influencing the employment relationship. You will also learn about the different mechanisms (e.g. employment relations policies; industry/ organisational practices) that various stakeholders adopt in their efforts in sustaining the employment relationship. The module aims to explore these aspects from national and international perspectives. The module also expects you to use your initiative in evaluating different employment relations issues within the workplace. The module therefore raises awareness of the practical and legal challenges that organisations experience in managing the employment relationship within the contemporary workplace
