This module will prepare you for undertaking clinical practice placements in the operating theatre environment. It will introduce you to the underpinning knowledge, skills and behaviours required for the novice Operating Department Practitioner (ODP) undertaking their first year of study. The module focuses on developing safe professional practice of the ODP, with indicative content introducing a wide-range of clinical topics across anaesthetic, surgical and post-anaesthetic care. Delivery extends across three semesters, and incorporates the clinical practice competencies and portfolio within the Practice Assessment Document (PAD). You will be required to gain experience within anaesthetic, surgical and post-anaesthetic care phases of the perioperative pathway, and reflect upon the role and contribution of the ODP. Key topics taught will include reflective practice, documentation and record keeping, patient observations, preparation of patients for surgery, basic airway management, surgical hand washing and donning of surgical attire, and the anaesthetic machine.
