Building on work undertaken at HE4, the module aims to equip you with a broad knowledge of the development of English poetry from the Renaissance to the present. You will become better-acquainted with the range of poetic forms and the way these have been and are used for different purposes, and will gain deeper understanding of the way different poetic devices are used to enrich meaning. Poetry will be studied both with regard to the historical context of its production and consumption and in terms of the insights afforded by modern critical scholarship. This module will also offer some opportunity to consider problems of translation from other languages, which will be of benefit when studying other modules with texts originally written in languages other than English. The poems studied in any one presentation will be a mixture of the well-known (i.e. frequently anthologised and justly famous) and the lesser- known which nevertheless exemplify significant features of their era and/or contribute to the understanding of the ways in which English poetry has developed.
